The Cameroon home based Lions beat Equatorial Guinea 2-1 in Yaoundé last Sunday in their first warm up game ahead of the 2018 Africa Nations Championship – CHAN scheduled for January in Kenya.
The team`s reaction when faced with difficulties was tested in that game after Oba Asu Pedro benefited from a defense mix up to fire home for the curtain raiser at the 11th minute of play. Wounded, the Intermediate Lions reacted immediately with a right flank raid that enables striker Messi Bouli Raphael to tap home over the keeper for the equalizer.
The goal opened the way for a total domination by the hosts, with Pangop Frantz concluding a Clarence Bitang long pass with a lob that sent the keeper scrambling for a late save that never was. Though the domination continued in the second segment, the score remained the same at full time. With the return leg game in view along with the CHAN, coach Rigobert Song knows there is still much to be done. For him, “my boys played well, i`m happy with the score and the fighting spirit especially after they conceded an early goal. It shows that they were hungry for that win.” But for the competition next January the football technician knows they`re still to be ready. “there is still much work to be done but we hope with many other friendly games like the one we had today, it`s possible for us to put up a good show in Kenya.”
The match was the first outing for the president of the normalization committee of FECAFOOT – Barrister Dieudonne Happi who came to the change room to talk to the players after the win. He described the game as “the best way of welcoming me and my team into the football world, congratulations for the win and know that you have our total support for the next games and the upcoming competition.”
The return leg game will be played this Sunday September 17 – 2017 in Malabo.
